POSITION SUMMARY: Directs the Internal Audit function and the Licensee Audit function.  Responsible for establishing and maintaining an effective Internal Audit Program with a primary focus on internal control, compliance and IT audits.  Provides reasonable assurance that risk management, control, and governance systems are functioning as intended and will enable the organization’s objectives and goals to be met. ​
  

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB: 

General

The Executive Director is a senior member of the Finance team and will be a member of the Risk Management Committee.  This position will provide audit updates (occasionally presentations) to the Audit Committee of the BMI Board related to Internal Audit activities.
 
Internal Audit (Internal Control, Compliance, Information Technology)
  • Leads efforts to provide reasonable assurance that risk management, control, and governance systems are functioning as intended and enables the organization’s objectives and goals to be met.  Key audit areas include (but are not limited to):
    • Evaluates and tests Information Technology general and application level controls;
    • Evaluates compliance with company policies (T&E, Capital Approvals, Conflict of Interest, etc.);
    • Evaluates and tests internal controls related to cash receipts and disbursements; and
    • Evaluates and tests internal controls related to the royalty distribution process.
  • Performs internal risk assessment and develops a formal annual internal audit plan.  Upon Risk Management Committee approval, executes and performs the responsibilities necessary to achieve the internal audit objectives outlined in the formal plan.
  • Manages the relationship of external consulting resources that are engaged to assist in the performance of certain internal audit activities (e.g. technical IT audits).
  • Prepares reports and communicates status of internal investigations and internal audits to the CFO and the Risk Management Committee.  Significant items may be reported to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Reviews and records plans and actions taken by management to correct conditions reported by audit findings.  Non-compliance situations will be reported to the Risk Management Committee.
  • Documents the audit procedures, results of testing, recommendations and corrective actions taken.
  • Supports the Annual Financial Audit performed by the Company’s external auditors as needed. 
Licensee Compliance Audits - The Licensee Compliance Audit function audits reporting compliance of licensees that have revenue based fees (i.e. the Radio Music Licensing Committee (RMLC) commercial radio licensing agreement, percentage of revenue Cable and Digital agreements). 
  • Leads the Licensee Audit activities of radio station compliance with revenue reporting under the new RMLC agreement as well as other license agreements.
  • Establishes a long-term Licensee Audit rotation plan.
  • Establishes audit goals (individual and department) and tracks performance.
  • Maintains appropriate audit documentation to include audits completed by audit year.
  • Coordinates with Licensing and other stakeholders in executing the Licensee Audit Plan.
Supervisory Responsibilities
 
Directly supervises the Planning & Analysis Staff.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business required.  
  • CISA required.  MBA, CPA, and/or CIA preferred.​
  • Minimum twelve (12) years internal audit or public accounting experience, including five working in a management capacity.  Minimum years of experience may be reduced for internal candidates with substantial internal controls knowledge. 
  • Experience directly auditing financial, operational and IT controls. 
  • Extensive experience designing and testing IT general and application level controls.  
  • Recent public company experience preferred. 
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and general understanding of enterprise risk management.
  • Adept at assessing complex processes to identify potential financial, operational, and compliance risks warranting audit attention.
  • Strong knowledge of internal auditing methodologies and standards.
  • Extensive understanding of information technology internal controls methodologies.  
  • Ability to quickly evaluate and process issues and creatively solve complex problems.
  • Ability to get results through others.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Conflict management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills for complex information.
